Abstract We study two linear estimators for stationary invertible VARMA models in echelon form – to achieve identification (model parameter unicity) – with known Kronecker indices. Such linear estimators are much simpler to compute than Gaussian maximum-likelihood estimators often proposed for such models, which require highly nonlinear optimization. The first estimator is an improved two-step estimator which can be interpreted as a generalized-least-squares extension of the two-step least-squares estimator studied in Dufour and Jouini (2005). The setup considered is also more general and allows for the presence of drift parameters. The second estimator is a new relatively simple three-step linear estimator which is asymptotically equivalent to ML, hence asymptotically efficient, when the innovations of the process are Gaussian. The latter is based on using modified approximate residuals which better take into account the truncation error associated with the approximate long autoregression used in the first step of the method. We show that both estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal under the assumption that the innovations are a strong …

Asymptotic distributions for some quasi-efficient estimators in echelon-form VARMA models

We study two linear estimators for stationary invertible VARMA models in echelon form (for identification), with known Kronecker indices. Asymptotic distributions for quasi-efficient estimators in echelon VARMA models

Two linear estimators for stationary invertible vector autoregressive moving average (VARMA) models in echelon form – to achieve parameter unicity (identification) – with known Kronecker indices are studied. It is shown that both estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal with strong innovations. The first estimator is a generalized-least-squares (GLS) version of the two-step least-squ...

Bootstrapping stationary invertible VARMA models in echelon form: A simulation evidence1

In this paper we propose bootstrapping Hannan and Rissanen (1982) estimators in stationary invertible VARMA models, with known order (p, q). Although we consider bootstrapping such models under the echelon form parameterization, the results we derive herein remain valid to other alternative identification issues. In particular, we shall exploit the theoretical developments stated in Dufour and ...

Distributions of the Weights of Sample Optimal Portfolios in Multivariate Conditionally Heteroscedastic Elliptical Models

In the paper the asymptotic distributions of sample optimal portfolio weights are derived. This is done under the weak assumption on the data generating process. It is assumed that the k -dimensional vector of asset returns follows a VARMA( 1 1 , p q )GARCH( 2 2 , p q ) process with the elliptically distributed error process. The estimators of the mean vector and the covariance matrix of the as...

Asymptotic distribution of a simple linear estimator for VARMA models in echelon form

In this paper, we study the asymptotic distribution of a simple two-stage (Hannan-Rissanen-type) linear estimator for stationary invertible vector autoregressive moving average (VARMA) models in the echelon form representation. General conditions for consistency and asymptotic normality are given. A consistent estimator of the asymptotic covariance matrix of the estimator is also provided, so t...
